The reseach laboratories
The reseach laboratories are located into the Botanical Garden
in the "Villa Chiappini" building and in the new area
recently builded up along the Garden wall; researches on floristic,
biosistematics, geobotany and cartography are carried out in
these labs. In future these areas will be increased in order
to allow biosystematic analysis, in particular all the analysis
related to molecular biology and micromorphology.
The Germoplasm Bank (BG-Sar)
Though the seed Bank project is dated back to 1997, places
for its development were chosen only after an agreement with
the local Administration of Cagliari, but it's just recently
that all the buildings have been completed, machinery and
cold stores have been finally bought.
Three laboratory have got ready: 1 rooms for the processing
of germoplasm, one room for cold stores, and one for the seed
bank. It has also built up a greenhouse with thermoregulated
benches for the study and propagation of the vegetal material.
CCB foundation was possible owing to MIUR financial support,
which enabled the scientific instruments and machinery purchase.
The experimental fields for ex
situ conservation
Fields for ex situ conservation are located in the lower part
of the Botanic Garden. The area is a slope with terraces and
it is divided in three fields: one contains sciaphilous species,
in the second and third field are located heliophilous plants.
Recently the Fields have been in part arranged to allow a
communication between them. In future it will be necessary
to supply the consolidation of walls, to level the terraces
and to shade the central field .
Two extra experimental fields are recently created at the
bottom of the desert area, where some entities are breed;
these species have been chosen for a project devised in collaboration
with the local Administration of Cagliari. Experimental fields
hosts mostly arboreal species that grow in the area for a
short time before the final destination is chosen, for this
reason plants have special needs as, for instance, a continuous
vase change.
Biodiversity in the Rocks
The Rock area for Biodiversity Conservation has been realized
on the purpose of preserve plants ex situ and it is
also used for didactic and divulgation activities. Previously
only small parts of the Botanical Garden were destined to
such purpose, now thanks to this new section the most part
of sardinian threatened taxa are grown in the area.
The Rock Garden realization began in December 2001, and it
was completed in March 2003. The area is about 600 square
metres, divided into calcareous, granitic and metamorphitic
sectors. Transplantation of propagated and potted species
began in Autumn 2002, and is going to be completed in Spring
2004.
The project includes also the enlargement to a nearby rock
area, unused by now due to the steep slope, the plan is to
create a rock area for sciafilous and hygrophilous plants.
